Pet memorial gift ideas that feel personal

By Bel Ricordo, updated

When someone loses a dog or cat, it's hard to know what to give. Flowers fade in a week, and a card can feel like too little. The gifts that help most tend to be small, personal and about that particular animal: their face, their name, a story only the family knows. Here are some ideas, including a few that have nothing to do with our shop.

A portrait from a favorite photo

A portrait gives the family something to look at that feels like the pet, not a generic paw print. Our memorial style is a gentle watercolor in soft golden light with a few tiny stars, and you can add the pet's name and years beneath it, for example: Max 2012-2026. The portrait is delivered as a digital file, so it can be printed and framed at any size up to 12 x 16 inches.

If it's a sympathy gift, you don't have to hand it over right away. Many people order it, keep the file, and pass it on when the time feels right. Some grief is too fresh for a portrait in the first week, and that's fine.

A memorial ornament

For families who decorate a tree, an ornament with the pet's portrait and name means they're part of the holidays every year. Ours are round ceramic ornaments, printed and shipped by our production partner, Printful. If it's for this Christmas, order printed items by December 7.

Finding the right photo

If you're buying for a friend, the hardest part is often the photo. Ask a family member quietly, or look for one the owner has shared and loved. A clear photo with the face, eyes and ears visible works best, but older or imperfect photos are welcome, and we tell you before we start if a photo limits the result. Please only send a photo you have permission to use. We delete customer photos 60 days after delivery.

Ideas that cost little or nothing

A tattoo design

Some people want to carry their pet with them. We make fine line designs from a photo for a tattoo artist to size and trace, with simple open lines that still look like the dog or cat. Many people order one as a memorial piece. The artist may adjust the design to suit the skin and placement.

What to say

You don't need anything clever. "I'm so sorry about Bella. She was such a good dog" is enough. Use the pet's name. Most people who lose a pet hear very little, because others aren't sure it counts as grief. It does, and saying so is a gift in itself.

If a portrait feels right, the memorial style is in the Portrait style menu on any of our portrait listings. You can see it described on our styles page and order from our Etsy shop.

Each portrait is created by our designer using AI tools from your photo, then reviewed and finished by hand. Printed and shipped by our production partner, Printful.
